The Norwegian is already the most successful biathlete in Olympic history with 11 medals and he will be looking to add to his six golds in Sochi in what will be his sixth Olympics.

Bjorndalen, who turned 40 this month, has not enjoyed his best season and has not won a World Championships individual medal since Vancouver where he won silver in the individual and gold in the team relay.

"I really want to do well in the sprint. This used to be one of my best disciplines," said Bjorndalen, who has won 50 Olympic and World Championship medals.

"Not everything has gone right for me over the last few years. Last year I prepared well for the World Championships and was close to getting the result I wanted.

"Therefore, I am going to put in a lot of effort into doing well in the sprint (in Sochi)."

His Norwegian team mate Emil Hegle Svendsen, who won four gold medals at the 2013 World Championships in Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic, and Frenchman Martin Fourcade are the two big favourites going into the Olympics.

Fourcade has been in excellent form and has been ranked the best overall biathlete for the last two seasons in the World Cup.

The host nation's hopes will rest on Evgeni Ustyugov, who won gold in Vancouver in the Mass Start and Anton Shipulin, who claimed two medals at the last World Championships.

However, there best hope of bringing home a medal could be in the relay, where the country is ranked number one in the world rankings.

Following Magdelena Neuner's shock retirement at the age of 24, the women's field is wide open.

The German was the most successful female athlete at the World Championships with 17 medals, but suffering from a lack of motivation she decided to quit the sport in March 2012.

Tora Berger looks set to take over from where Neuner left off, the Norwegian having won four gold medals at the last World Championships in Nove Mesto.

She is currently third in the World Cup rankings and will be determined to put in a good performance in Sochi, with the 32-year-old intending to retire after the games.

Daria Domracheva and the young Czech biathlete Gabriela Soukalova are more than capable of upsetting Berger.

Domracheva, from Belarus, is the reigning mass start world champion and has won two World Cup events this season.

However, it is the 24-year-old Czech who has been setting the pace on the World Cup this season with three wins putting her top of the rankings.

Germany's 36-year-old Andrea Henkel is in the twilight of her career, having first competed at the Salt Lake City Games, but is still a force to be reckoned with although it would be a surprise if she adds to her four career Olympic medals in Sochi.

Russia won just one medal in the women's biathlon event at the Vancouver Olympics, in the relay, and they have a relatively young squad, with Olga Vilukhina and Irina Starykh 25 and 26 respectively.

They will be led by 35-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist Olga Zaitseva, who is also hoping to enjoy a golden swansong in Sochi before retiring.

The squad are coached by German Wolfgang Pichler and Zaitseva agrees with his belief that Russia's women will win at least one individual gold.

"He always thinks we will be the best, but of course that is not always the case," she said. "We are doing everything to try and win. We are not sitting around or not getting a suntan.

"We are doing everything in our power to try and win."

Ex-Formula One driver Alex Zanardi is set to make a return to motor racing by taking part in the Blancpain GT Sprint Series behind the wheel of a BMW Z4 GT3 this year.

The 47-year-old lost both legs in a crash while racing in Champ Car in 2001, but overcame his disability to return to motorsport. He returned just two years later racing in the European Touring Car Championship in a specially adapted car before driving and winning races for BMW in the World Touring Car Championship.

He stopped racing cars in 2009 but went on to win two gold medals in handbike racing at the 2012 Paralympics. However, his desire to return to motorsport never faded and it was reinvigorated while testing a BMW DTM car in 2012.

"Even after leaving the sport in 2009, I was still a racing driver at heart," he said. "When I took to the track in the BMW M3 DTM at the end of 2012, I immediately got itchy fingers again. Ever since that moment I have been toying with the idea of returning to motor racing.

"Together with BMW we have looked at various options. I am even more pleased that it has worked out with my old friends at ROAL Motorsport. I would like to say a big thank you to BMW for this unique opportunity."

Like when Sepp Blatter and his cronies re-imagined women's soccer as a sport where tighter shorts and low cut shirts could help sell the game.

But old world elitism isn't just the domain of the board rooms.

On the field, just eight countries have ever won FIFA's World Cup. That's over 80 years of competition. Only another four countries have even made it as far as runners-up.

It's not like it's a small sample size either. FIFA has more recognized entities than the United Nations, with tiny Gibraltar being the latest to join the ranks of 209 national football associations.

Still, if you happen to live in a country outside of Europe or South America, you've never seen your country host the Jules Rimet Trophy or its successor.

Maybe some of you are saying that's a good thing. It's the ugliest trophy in global sport anyway.

But I'm assuming you stay up some nights like I do, longingly knowing your country will not hoist that golden ugliness in your lifetime, for all the planet to see.

For those who don't live in Canada (currently ranked 114th by FIFA) you may still dare to dream, and after Friday's World Cup draw, your dream has taken on a clearer path... even if that path is likely short and headed over a cliff.

1) Away Doubts Extinguished
It's a compliment to Arsenal that in beating Spurs on Wednesday night, Manchester City went top of the Premier League for the first time since mid-August. Having got there, it would be brave (or potentially stupid) to suggest that they will finish in any other position.

The evident reservation about City before Wednesday's match was the nagging doubt regarding their form away from the Etihad, where they have been disgustingly ruthless. Six victories in seven away games was obviously more than acceptable, but Leicester, Fulham, Swansea, West Ham and Blackburn were five of those opponents.

Those doubts were effectively extinguished during an opening half-hour in which the visitors were phenomenally dominant. Twelve shots in 30 minutes included a 14th goal in 13 games for Sergio Aguero, and both the Argentinean and his strike partner Edin Dzeko both had chances to extend City's lead. The penalty/red card double whammy effectively ended the game as a contest, but this was still a City side in almost complete control for 80 minutes.

The statistics are verging on obscene. 115 goals in all competitions before the end of January; this is a side scoring in record-breaking fashion. There have been eight occasions this season on which a team has scored more than five goals or more in a Premier League match - City are responsible for 50% of those.

You don't have to like City, but it's pretty difficult not to sit back and admire them. Sorry Spurs fans.


2) Rash challenge. Penalty

The decision from Andre Marriner five minutes into the second half will be much-debated, but was correct. Danny Rose's naivety to fly into a challenge from behind deserved nothing better, and slow-motion replays clearly showed him catching Dzeko's heel before making connection with the ball. AC Milan have signed QPR midfielder Adel Taarabt on loan with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.

The 24-year-old had been on loan at Premier League club Fulham since last summer but has now joined the Italian giants until the end of the season.
"I'm very happy to be here and it's an honour to play for the strongest team in Italy," Taarabt told AC Milan's official website.

"I'll give 100% and I hope we'll have some fun together".

Manchester City used another rampant scoring display to replace Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with a 5-1 win at Tottenham on Wednesday, while Chelsea lost ground in the title race with a 0-0 draw against West Ham.

After beating Spurs 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium, Manuel Pellegrini's side was unstoppable at White Hart Lane as well and extended its unbeaten run to 20 matches, in which time they have scored 69 goals.

City received a decisive boost when Danny Rose was sent off in the 50th minute for tripping Edin Dzeko. Yaya Toure converted the penalty before Dzeko made it 3-0. Etienne Capoue's pulled one back but Stevan Jovetic and Vincent Kompany added gloss to victory.

City now leads Arsenal by one point, with Chelsea lagging three points behind. Elsewhere, Sunderland beat Stoke 1-0 and Aston Villa defeated West Bromwich Albion 4-3 in a derby that saw six goals scored in the first half.

Since the thrashing at City and the subsequent sacking of coach Andre Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood had overseen an upturn in fortunes at White Hart Lane, with Spurs undefeated under their new manager and having won their last four Premier League matches.

Pellegrini's team was therefore expecting a tougher test at White Hart Lane.

They had the better start as the in-form Sergio Aguero went close in the fourth minute with a shot from an angle that hit the post.

Aguero looked unstoppable during the first half and put his team in front in the 15th minute, scoring for the eighth successive game when he slipped the ball past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from David Silva's assist.

Diego Maradona has launched a scathing attack on Pele and suggested the Brazilian will always be regarded as the second best to him.

The duo have regularly bickered over their respective standing and Maradona was not pleased to see Pele lift an honorary award at the recent FIFA Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich. Maradona was handed a similar prize in the 1990s.

The 19-year-old rose from 31st to a career-high 19th thanks to her surprise run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open last week.

The latest stadium inaugurated for the World Cup in Brazil held its first match on Sunday, a day after demonstrators across Brazil protested against the tournament.

The Arena das Dunas in the north eastern city of Natal sustained superficial damage during protests, but Sunday’s opening match went ahead without incident in front of tens of thousands of fans.

About 1,000 people gathered in Sao Paulo and smaller demonstrations took place in several other cities on Saturday to protest about the costs of the World Cup. On its Facebook page, the Anonymous Rio protest group billed “Operation Stop the World Cup” as this year’s first act against the football tournament.

In Natal, demonstrators went to the Arena das Dunas and destroyed some protective fencing and put fire on temporary tents outside of the stadium.

The Arena das Dunas is the seventh World Cup stadium to be completed. The first match at the new venue first match was contested between Alecrim FC, a Brazilian football team based in Natal and owned by Englishman Anthony Armstrong Emery, and ABC, the oldest club in Rio Grande do Norte.

Alecrim FC (founded in 1915) was once a top flight Brazilian side however when Armstrong Emery bought the team it was going through a difficult period. He has taken on the challenge of restoring the club to its former glory and has made several high profile signings (including Stefano Seedorf – the cousin of the former-Dutch international and newly appointed Milan coach Clarence Seedorf). The club has been state champion on six occasions and has previously played in the top division of Brazilian football

Professor Wayne McLaughlin of Caribbean Toxicology made the claim on day two of the JADCO hearing examining the case of former 100 metres world record holder Powell, who tested positive last year and faces a two-year ban if found guilty.

"It (oxilofrine) doesn't improve speed," McLaughlin said, noting his company carried two standard tests similar to those used in the WADA-accredited laboratory in Montreal that found oxilofrine in the supplement Epiphany D1.

Powell, 31, was one of five Jamaicans, along with former training partner Sherone Simpson, to test positive at the national championships in June. Her hearing resumes on Feb. 4.

Both sprinters have blamed Canadian trainer Chris Xuereb for the failed tests, saying he supplied supplements, including Epiphany D1, which has since been found to contain oxilofrine.

Xuereb has denied providing them with performance-enhancing drugs and said the sprinters should take responsibility for their failed dope tests.

On Wednesday, Powell's agent Paul Doyle refuted suggestions by JADCO's attorney Lackston Robinson that not enough due diligence had been carried out before the Canadian physical therapist was hired to work with the Jamaican sprinter.

"I simply relied on the referrals of well known and trusted physios who we had worked with in the past," he told the hearing.

The JADCO attorney underlined that Xureb, who, in addition to handling Powell's physical recovery, was also administering anti-inflammatory injections and Vitamin B12, was neither certified as a doctor, massage therapist, chiropractor or physiotherapist.

The hearing for the twice world championship bronze medallist will resume on February 12.

Between them, the four sides in Group H have appeared in 28 separate FIFA World Cups™. The crunch match
Belgium-Russia: Top spot in the section could well be decided when the two European hopefuls lock horns at the Maracana on 22 June. In terms of past encounters, Russia hold the edge, having faced Belgium eight times as an independent nation or part of the Soviet Union and recorded a quartet of wins, along with one draw and three defeats. The picture is a little different on the World Cup stage, however, with both sides posting a pair of victories from their four previous jousts. In addition, Belgium have not lost to Russia since 1982.

Britain's Chris Froome must successfully navigate a number of traps lurking around a tricky 2014 Tour de France route if he is to retain his title in cycling's most prestigious stage race.

Starting in northern England on July 5, the Tour features stretches of cobbled roads in northern France, a treacherous crossing of the Vosges mountains and only one time trial - a favourite discipline of Team Sky leader Froome. "Uncertainty is part of the competition," Tour director Christian Prudhomme told reporters when asked about the cobbled sections, which could turn the fifth stage into a lottery.

"It would not make sense to avoid the cobbles when we go through northern France," he added.

But Froome told reporters: "If you know a rider who likes the cobbles, you tell me."


Team Sky sports director Nicolas Portal told Reuters: "It's an interesting route, anything can happen, we'll have to be careful. It's good for the pure climbers. They (the organisers) made it spicier.

"It is going to be an intense battle every day on every terrain."

Asked if Froome should fear the cobbles, Portal replied: "Even though he does not have a beautiful style on the bike, Chris is rarely on the ground. He knows how to handle his bike."


Prudhomme said the 2014 Tour would pay its respects to those who died in World War One as the peloton will ride on the Chemin des Dames and Verdun where many battles took place a century ago.

"I'd like to see Bradley Wiggins there," International Cycling Union (UCI) president Brian Cookson told a media briefing.

Wiggins won the 2012 race but sat out of this year's edition through injury and it is unclear whether he will take part in the 2014 Tour along with team mate Froome.

"It will keep the media guessing in speculation," said Cookson.

Should Froome cope with the 15 km of cobbles spread out over nine sections, where his rivals will hope to catch the Team Sky juggernaut off guard on a terrain unlikely to suit them, the Briton will then need to combat three mountain ranges.

They will start in the Vosges, with the 10th stage being "a real mountain stage where the best GC (general classification) riders should fight", according to Prudhomme.

The stage ends at the top of the Planche des Belles Filles, where Froome triumphed last year.
